No New Years Resolutions To See Here

You’ve barely left the house after the holidays, you’re doing your best to get into the New Year, get back into work, stay warm, avoid bugs and everywhere you look you’re been told what to do different – what to give up, what to take up, what not to eat, what not to drink…. Doesn’t it drive you to distraction? I’m over it already.

In the past, I’ve been a great New Year’s resolution person – lists of things to do more of - to do better. And then I realised the lists were always the same – pretty much the same things every year. So I’ve stopped making the list. I still like the concept of the New Year though, of a reset and a fresh start but I’m trying to reframe it as simply a review of my priorities.

So I’m afraid there’s nothing to see here – no New Year’s Resolutions advice to give you. Maybe for my next blog, I can expand this thread by asking my team what, if any, their resolutions are.

In the meantime, I can go so far as to tell you what my NY’s priorities are:

- Walking outdoors, ideally in the park, ideally in the morning, without headphones. I’m aiming for 30 mins but even 10 mins will be a bonus.

- Focus on regular movement – get up from my desk regularly and move a bit more or do some stretches.

-Read actual paper books and keep away from my phone other than for communications.

- Give some time to a non- work-based hobby, in my case it’s learning Italian.

Maybe it is still a list of New Year’s Resolutions, but it doesn’t seem to have the same pressure to succeed or ‘fix’ something that’s been there in the past, and more crucially, I’m not telling you to do anything.

If there’s anything specific you’d like us to help you with in terms of a movement issue or pain problem, please get in touch and please subscribe to our regular updates focused on wellness advice.

But for now – Happy New Year – you’ve got this!

Warm wishes,

Helen Skehan, Practice Principal
