Running Myths Debunked
What We're Reading at the Moment
Our Physiotherapist Kamila is currently reading 'The Science Of Running' by Canadian physiotherapist Chris Napier and Running Coach Jerry Ziak
Here she shares some useful nuggets from her reading:
- Runners quickly discover that there is plenty of contradictory advice out there.
- With so much conflicting information readily available, running can become a confusing subject to explore.
- Do not be misguided by the common myths shown here, which have all been debunked by research.
MYTH | FACT |
RUNNING WILL HURT MY KNEES AND RESULT IN ARTHRITIS WHEN I AM OLDER | RECREATIONAL RUNNING CAN PROTECT AGAINST THE DEVELOPMENT OF KNEE OSTEOARTHRITIS AND CAN IMPROVE THE SYMPTOMS |
I WAS INJURED BECAUSE I DIDN’T STRETCH ENOUGH BEFORE I RAN | STATIC STRETCHING DOES NOT REDUCE THE RISK OF INJURY, YOU SHOULD INCLUDE DYNAMIC STRETCHING AS PART OF A GENERAL WARM-UP |
I WAS INJURED BECAUSE I WORE THE WRONG SHOES FOR MY FOOT TYPE | THE SHOE TYPE DOES NOT MATTER AS LONG AS IT IS A COMFORTABLE RUNNING DESIGN |
I SHOULD DO HIGH-REP, LOW-RESISTANCE STRENGTH TRAINING TO BUILD THE STRENGTH I NEED FOR RUNNING | HIGH-RESISTANCE TRAINING TWICE WEEKLY FOR SIX WEEKS OR LONGER IS BEST |
IF I WANT TO RUN FASTER AND BE INJURY-FREE I NEED TO FOREFOOT STRIKE | NEITHER FOOTSTRIKE PATTERN IS BETTER |
