Qualifications and Experience

Hugo qualified as a physiotherapist in 2003 from The Escola Superior de Tecnologias da Saude in Lisbon. In 2015 he completed his post-graduate qualification in functional osteopathy. He moved to London in 2017.

Hugo has worked with both the Portuguese Swimming Federation (FPN) and Sporting Club of Portugal in the swimming, water polo and triathlon department. He was head physio for the FPN, overseeing the preparation for the elite swimming team of Portugal at the Rio Olympic games in 2016. He lectured in osteopathy, clinical reasoning and sports osteopathy at the Instituto de Técnicas de Saúde in Lisbon.

In addition to his clinical work, Hugo is the co-author of a book providing guidelines for warm-up, recovery and injury prevention for swimming. These have been released as the basic guidelines for these subjects at national level in Portugal.

Hugo has a wealth of experience in managing orthopaedic, musculoskeletal and sport related injuries. He has also worked in hospital, private practice and gym settings.

Special Interests

Hugo's key skills include a combination of hands-on manual therapy, osteopathic techniques and load management programmes both in sports injuries and orthopaedic rehabilitation. He has a keen interest in upper limb and knee injuries caused by overloading and compensatory movement patterns.

Hugo speaks fluent English, Portuguese and Spanish. In his spare time, he enjoys travelling, playing tennis, swimming and running.
